Organisationally British Petroleum has three business segments:
1. Exploration and Production - upstream activities include oil and natural gas exploration and production, together with the management of crude oil and natural gas pipelines, processing and export terminals. The term "upstream" connect to the exploration, production and transport of oil prior to the refining process. Production is the process of drilling and extracting the crude oil from the ground. But before extracting oil and gas, suitable quantities and locations have to be found.
BP pipelines and ships safely transport company products around the world to serve the energy needs of a demanding market place.
Oil pipelines are made from steel or plastic tubes with an inner diameter between 12 to 47 inches.
Usually, a pipeline is built above the surface; however, in environmentally sensitive areas or if the pipeline runs in close proximity to a densely populated area, it is built under the surface to minimize the impact of potential accidents. The oil is kept in motion by a system of pump stations built along the pipeline.
For natural gas, feed lines are used to distribute the gas to homes and businesses.
BP Shipping was formed in 1915 to carry products for the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, the forerunner of BP. BP Shipping operates an international fleet of crude oil tankers, product tankers and LNG (liquefied natural gas) carriers, transporting these energy products all over the world. Our ships are crewed by around 1,000 seafarers, supported by over 400 on shore staff and lead the industry in terms of health and safety performance.
2. Refining and Marketing -company downstream operations refine, transport, sell and trade crude oil and petroleum products in over 100 countries. They include refineries, lubricants, petrol stations, business marketing and chemicals (Aromatics and Acetyls) businesses.
"Downstream" is the term commonly used to refer to the refining, selling and distribution of products derived from crude oil. Crude oil is rife with different hydrocarbons – the refining process separates these hydrocarbons and produces different types of fuels and lubricants. Hydrocarbon "chains" have different vaporization temperatures; in refining, crude oil is heated to varying degrees, and this process separates the chains, allowing the extraction of petroleum gas, gasoline, kerosene and other valuable energy sources.
BP now retail fuel and everyday convenience items, through more than 25,000 petrol stations worldwide. They serve millions of customers each day through a collection of powerful brands, including Arco, Castrol, Amoco, Aral and BP.
In Europe, BP is the second largest fuels' retailer overall, and the largest fuels' retailer in Germany - the biggest market. We have over 2,700 outlets in Germany today, mostly branded Aral, and this gives company a gasoline market segment share of about 22%. British Petroleum use the BP and Amoco brand names in the USA east of the Rocky Mountains and ARCO to the west. In North America, BP is the second largest fuels' marketer, with its Amoco Ultimate gasoline providing the highest premium grade ratio.
BP is also developing company retail presence in China with partners Petrochina and Sinopec with plans to develop more than 1400 outlets by the end of 2007.
3. Gas, Power and Renewables - company gas business consists of three business units structured regionally: America, Europe and Asia. They focus on developing market access opportunities, negotiating and securing contracts for BP equity and third party LNG supplies; and BP participation in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) regasification terminals.
BP Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs) business is centered in Houston, North America where company are the leading producer and marketer of NGLs. The growing International NGLs business is based in London and is developing new business opportunities.
For many years, a predictable industry involving a small number of countries, mainly in Asia, LNG is now a dynamic and vibrant business connecting nations across the globe.
LNG, today, is helping meet increasing demand for energy in rapidly growing economies such as China, India and South Korea. It is helping to offset the decline in indigenous gas production in major consuming markets such as the US and the UK, and adding to the diversity of energy supply in countries such as Spain and Italy.
Solar, wind, hydrogen power and gas-fired power technologies have the potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and BP believe company can create a profitable, high-growth, global business in the course of the next decade.
