Slovakia (Slovak Republic) is a landlocked country in Central Europe with a population of over 5 million and an area of about 49,000 square kilometres. The Slovak Republic borders the Poland to the north, the Czech Republic and Austria to the west, Hungary to the south and Ukraine to the east. Slovakia has been a EU member state since 2004 and is set to adopt the euro currency by the beginning of 2009
