Latvia, officially the Republic of Latvia (Latvijas Republika o latvian), is a country in Northern Europe in the Baltic region. It is bordered to the south by Lithuania (588 km), to the north by Estonia (343 km), and to the east both by Belarus (141 km) and the Russian Federation (276 km). Across the Baltic Sea to the west lies Sweden. Official languages – Latvian. Government – Parliamentary republic (President, Prime Minister).

Riga – the capital and largest city.

Latvia has the fastest growing economy in Europe. On May 1, 2004, Latvia joined the European Union. Main industries – synthetic fibers, agricultural machinery, fertilizers, radios, electronics, pharmaceuticals, processed foods, textiles, timber; note – dependent on imports for energy and raw materials.
