Haiti, officially the Republic of Haiti, a country in the West Indies, occupying the western third of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, which lies between Cuba to the west and Puerto Rico to the east. The remainder of Hispaniola forms the Dominican Republic. Haiti's terrain is predominantly mountainous, and its main population centers are near the coast. "Haiti," an Arawak Indian name, means "land of mountains."

Port-au-Prince – the capital and the largest city. Official languages – French, Haitian Creole. Government – Presidential republic.

Haiti is primarily an agricultural country, with few readily marketable mineral resources and no large-scale manufacturing. Currency - Haitian gourde (HTG). Fiscal year – 1 October - 30 September. Inflation (CPI) – 8.9% (2007). Main industries – flour, sugarcane, light assembly, textiles, cement, industries based on imported parts.
